FOUR EUROS A CRATE

Outside our greengrocer's this morning the tomatoes were arriving more quickly than the men could stack and display them. Lots of messy sauce-making will be taking place in my kitchen over the next few days!

... wow you don't live near that place where they have the rampant tomato-throwing festival do you..? ... No that's in Spain isn't it...

Oh BTW I'm reading The Godfather by Mario Puzo... what a fascinating novel! Far better than the film... I remember when they caught Sicily's Capo di Tutti Cappi ... sorry if that's bad spelling... watching black and white tv in a barn... (what is the point in being so rich and powerful if you're going to sit in a BARN watching BLACK AND WHITE television even if you ARE on the run you could at least get holed up somewhere a bit more glamorous!!

Anyway I've been going around wishing everyone a great weekend thinking it was friday when it's still thursday... so do have a good one when finally it does come!

all the best

That is absolutely amazing...Sicilian tomatoes cost £1.98 (2 euro.94)for a tiny tiny punnet in my place....I would be making tomato sauce for that price...yummy

Are you running a business?

More bootlegging?
Tomato Brandy?

I think we need to know...

Do you take the skin off before making your pomodoro sauce? I always scald my fingers doing that.

You could make tomato wine. They make it in the Channel islands. We visited the,(it isn't a brewery or factory) place where they do make it and brought some home for family. No one guessed by taste that it was made from tomatoes.

Gleds, hi. No, but we have a choc festival, an artichoke festival and all sorts of others! The Puzo books scare me silly! I totally agree - what a boring life! You have a good weekend too!
Blimey, Anne, how prices have gone up there!
Oh, definitely, Crushed!!
Marymary, I must look that up...

Age, I shall do my best.

WW, yes. I pour boiling water over first, then cold water and leave them for five minutes to five hours, depending what else I'm up to. Getting the pips out is the messiest bit!

Well, they look just beautiful! I will miss the 50 plants my Dad usually grows, I think he's finally feeling his age (90). I loathe store bought here, tasteless...
Hey, when and where is the artichoke festival there?

I do love fresh, lovely tomatoes!

I bet they taste like tomatoes too. The ones we buy here certainly do not not. They look like tomatoes but do not smell nor taste like tomatoes.

Hi WCLC,
Don't you wonder what the poor farmer is paid for his hard work when they go so cheaply?

Well they certainly look delicious and will make good sauce. I leave everything in when I make sauce, skins, seeds, the whole lot.

In Vancouver we have the largest hothouse production of tomatoes in North America. They are picked with the stems still attached and are grown in hydroponic conditions. We have all come to prefer these tomatoes since they are so delicious. They keep going all year round so we are now enjoying these at 79c a lb (450 G) or 55 centesimi. Of course in the winter they are five times that price. We hardly ever see field grown tomatoes here anymore, and they always come from Mexico and are tasteless.

Hi, Pinkacorn. I can imagine how you will miss your father's tomatoes. There are several Sicilian towns which have artichoke festivals in April. I think the nearest to here is Niscemi. I missed it this year but hope to go next. Lee, Eurodog, these taste lovely. with pleasure, Mutley. You could give them out in church!! Hi, jmb. I bet your tomatoes taste delicious, too. I didn't know about the production there. I can imagine the Mexican ones would be tasteless after their journey.

If only we could grow them like that in the UK, I adore tomatoes.
