CHIUSI

Three bars, all closed for business. But I hope you can just see that the owner of the Capriccio has stacked his terrace furniture outside. [The Altro Posto does this when closed, too.] If this were Britain, this furniture would have been "liberated" and dispersed overnight, and the various chairs and tables would be adorning patios over a wide area of our green and pleasant land by now. I don't know whether the fact that no one has touched them is down to the innate honesty of the folk around here or to the number of eyes that are always watching everything you do. Let us be charitable and imagine that the reason is the first.

That is nice to see. Here in California the furniture would either be chained to a cemented post or at the flea market next day.

Don't steal from someone in Sicily, if you want to keep both hands on the end of your arms.

I tend to think it may well be the latter as I often see furniture and other adornments left out here overnight. In addition to such happenings as last week when I needed to go to the toliet while at my "office' at the Majestic, and I did not want to leave my 3000$ laptop sitting about, but didn't want to lug it in either. My waiter came over when he noticed my distress and assured me he would stand guard. He was not kidding as when I returned he was, like the redcoats at Buckingham Palace, standing exactly where I left him.

Let's give them the benefit of the doubt, WCLC. But perhaps they paid enough protection money to take care of it, but the others did not.

Pink, it would be like that i most parts of Britain. Steve, jmb: No Mafia down here! Lady M, you may be right. That's a lovely story.

I miss "le ferie di agosto". People are just too tired to do anything in Sicily in August, even to steal - I guess!

Hi, TAT - that may well explain it! What with the heat and all, even I am exhausted! But the general closure of everything at the same time still drives me mad.

Same here re the outdoor furniture...I'm sure it would last long sitting around like that! Although I believe we all should be able to live that way without fear of some idiot stealing what is not his/hers.
