I've often said that gel al limone must be among the most refreshing desserts in the world and this is one of the most elegant presentations I've seen of this dish:

OF CHIPS AND CRACCO
Oh, yes, Sicilians love chips although they try to pretend that patatine consumption is a British vice. Chips appear here on and prior to pizza, with arancini, as side dishes and with just about everything. People tuck into them using cocktail sticks so that everyone will think they are only having a little taste. As I've said many times before, chip calories don't count when you're out so what could be nicer than a plate of antipasti topped with some of the sinful morsels?
I then had a main course of scaloppine al limone and very good they were, too. My culinary hero, Italy's "sexy chef" Carlo Cracco, would say that the strawberry was out of place as it was not integral to the dish, but I thought it was pretty:
My companion enjoyed this fresh sausage pizza:
Some of you have already seen the gel al limone but here it is again [without chips!]

SPOONFED
Regular readers will know that one of my favourite Sicilian desserts is gel al limone and over the weekend I enjoyed it at two fabulous meals to which I was treated. There seems to be a new fashion for thrusting the spoon into it to serve:

NEW YEAR'S DAY LUNCH AT GINA'S
We were a jolly gathering for lunch at Gina's house in the country today and I thought you'd like to see the company:

There was lovely, crispy pasta al forno as only Gina can make it:
There was salsiccia
and good, local bread
and there were patate al forno:
Then there were polpette
and spiedini
and peperoni:
There was orange salad
and then there were vanilla oranges:

whilst another sister had made this sumptuous chocolate crostata:
I had decided to mix traditions and had invented this Semifreddo di Christmas Pudding. I am glad to say it was pronounced a success and tomorrow I'll post the recipe for you!
There had to be cannoli
and finally there was my favourite gel al limone, made by Gina's mother-in-law. This dessert is always so refreshing, whatever the season:
Grazie per la bella festa, Gina!

A BIRTHDAY LUNCH IN POZZALLO
Valentine's Night is a night to stay in for many single people, as who, when they are on their own, wants to tread a restaurant floor covered in rose petals, listen to romantic music or watch couples gazing into each other's eyes all evening? It would be like twisting a knife further into your own wound and it never ceases to amaze me that couples don't get this.
However, it's my birthday and it's been a lovely day in Sicily so I was delighted when my friend Carol invited me to lunch at a restaurant in Pozzallo, a town whose main street backs directly onto the beach. First, here are a few photos of Pozzallo as it looked this afternoon:

Now I want to introduce you to Carol. She writes about Sicily and other places where she has lived or which she has visited and you can find some of her articles here.
OK, let's get to the food and these are the dishes we ordered:
Cavatieddi pasta with ricotta and peas for me
and lolli pasta with fava beans for Carol:
Then I had what Italians call a "mixed roast" but is really a mixed grill
with a mixed salad
while Carol enjoyed chicken cutlet and chips:
There was my favourite gel al limone for dessert and you could just tell that this had been made with the freshest Sicilian lemons:
And finally, here is your birthday girl blogger:
I had a great time. Thanks, Carol. xx

NATALE DA GINA
I was lucky enough to be invited to spend the main celebration, late on Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day lunch, with my friend Gina and her family. As regular readers will know, Gina is a wonderful cook and when her mother-in-law is there too, the feasting never ends! So without further ado, here is what we all ate over Christmas:
Christmas Eve began with a choice of red pasta
or white pasta with mushrooms but of course, we all had both!
Then there was fried baccalà [salt cod]. [I can't eat this because I am allergic to fish.]
Whenever Gina's mother-in-law presides, there is a wonderful polpettone
and Gina had made this steak pie:
There were condimenti of dressed peppers
and patate al forno cooked with rosemary:
There were fennel and green salads too [not shown] and then there was fresh fruit to clear the palate
before we embarked upon Gina's homemade torrone
and her mother-in-law's delicious almond biscuits:
Finally there was panettone [not shown] and then it was midnight and time to open the presents.
Then there was pasta al forno
followed by special sausages
and this dish of meltingly tender lamb with potatoes.
After the salads, there was gel al limone
and of course there was a tray of Sicilian pastries
followed by panettone which could be cut into star shapes:

A good night's sleep and suddenly it was time for Christmas Day lunch, beginning with this delightful antipasti arrangement:

If you're wondering if I can still stand up after that lot, the answer is just about! Thank you, Gina and family for a wonderful Christmas.
