A MARKETING MASTERPIECE?

Originally shown at Milan Expo and published on Vimeo in September, the video below has now, with much fanfare, been uploaded to YouTube and is being hailed here as a masterpiece. It is certainly a break with traditional clips promoting Sicily and has been conceived with social networks in mind. The target market is Northern Europe, where people are known to start planning their holidays in January.

I'd very much like to know what all of you think before I divulge my own opinion but I do want to congratulate the Comune di Ragusa for having the courage to do something in a new way and I wish them every success.

Ragusa - easy to reach, hard to leave
Another, shorter version [1m.05] is also available on YouTube.
The director is Riccardo Lupo.

To cut my answer to your question short: No.

I enjoyed watching this... My comments:
The good news:
It is slick, it is contemporary, the filming is quality, it will sell in Northern Italy, the scenes of Ragusa were wonderful.

The bad news:
It hurts my heart to be distracted by the "romance"...packaging it all in sexual innuendo. Feels like "Berlusconi" to me. But, as they say, "sex sells!" Also...she doesn't even look Sicilian to me!

I thought it had some lovely scenes in it. I am not crazy on the rather "advert" theme, but it will I think appeal to lots of people as it is a very popular approach. I hope it does well.

It's a nice little film, but it could be about anywhere, couldn't it?

I want to go back to Sicily again, but then I did anyway.

But this year it has to be Tuscany I'm afraid (as my brother owns a house there): it's a hard job, but someone has to do it!

Could do without the voice-over and the posing bikini-clad girl. And, perhaps, I don't know, it doesn't seem to show a lot of Sicily.

Good to have all your comments and to know I'm not the only one who thinks the couple story is misplaced. Let's see what happens.

The romance thing was overdone and distracted.

I agree, James.
