WHAT IN SICILY? - 30

Two large stones precisely placed against a wall on a busy street.  They are never moved.  Can you guess what they are used for?

Aides for people to peer over the wall?

Prevent cars from bumping into the wall.

Ciao Pat and best wishes for 2011, I am back at last catching up on so much that I missed while I was away from the blogsphere! Thankyou for comments you left on News From Italy while I was absent.
Maybe for mounting one's horse?

Haha! Good idea, jams but no. Good idea, Rosaria. Hi, Carmen. Probably! Hi, LindyLouMac. Glad you're back and buon anno to you. Could have been, but no. Clever idea, Arlene. Buon anno to you.

OK, here's the answer: they were put there by the fruitsellers. Thery sit on them in the shade of the wall, watching their lorries opposite. When a customer comes, they dash across the road to serve them. They sit on these stones for hours, day after day.

I would never have guessed that. They are so low for seats and the fruitsellers must be very supple.

Hi, Ellee. Yes, they are spritely souls.
