I have seen these, but have no idea what it is! I recently bought a terracotta piggy bank made on a wheel and it looks strangely similar and shape and size to the pot in your picture. I am curious!

To keep olive oil in?

I think it is an amphora for olive oil too.

Weeelllll... could be for olive oil, could be a for poking holes in an angel cake? Yes, we know my culinary knowledge is sad....

Probably CherryPie and Michelle are correct but I'm going to guess an amphora for storing wine. The top knob looks like it is sealed to prevent evaporation of the contents.

It looks like the sort of jar in which you may find 40 thieves.

I have no idea a veg store with space for an extra long courgette?

How on earth do you get the money in... is there a tiny slot somehwere on the other side?

If SO you should be able to tip out coins along the flat of a butterknife or something like that ;->...

Well done, Lost. It is a piggy bank! Good guess, Cherie, Michelle and RecreationalArt. RecreationalArt, I know how you feel! Anche a me l'Italia mi mancava molto quando ero in Gran Bretagna. Vivere qui è sempre stato il mio sogno, ma non è senza problemi!
Good one, Mopsa and very original, Lady M! Very good guess, Flutterby. WW, I hope they're 40 handsome male thieves! Most original, jams!

Hi, Gleds. That's right - a slot on the other side. The friend who owns it assures me you have to smash it to get the money out! [Wine was a good guess.]
