A TIME FOR EVERYTHING

If you are thinking that I have been somewhat absent from this blog of late, you are right, for a little thing called Brexit has been taking up much of my time and thoughts. Like most British expats  and, I imagine, most EU nationals currently resident in the UK, I find the situation very worrying indeed. My 23rd February post on this subject has had, to my surprise, over 22,000 views to date - a record for Sicily Scene - but I wish it hadn't been necessary to write it.

I spent most of yesterday - jubilantly called "Brexit Day" by the Brexiteers - in deep gloom but did raise my head for long enough to notice that the bars of Modica are starting to bring out traditionally made gelato again and what could I do but console myself with some?

The freshly squeezed orange juice I so love in autumn and winter has now disappeared, as no bar owner worthy of the name would sell you a glass of the stuff once he deems the oranges past their best but gelato is definitely back for the duration, if not of the Brexit process, at least until October! Yes, I can safely say that Brexit has driven me to gelato!

A SPRING IN MY STEP

More countryside-oriented folk may celebrate almond blossom and birdsong but the sign of spring sure to put - well, a spring in my step - is when the bar owners of the Sorda district here in Modica start making their own ice cream again.

Goodbye, diet - see you around October!

SABATO MUSICALE

"Seek no more than your daily bread, surrender to life and never despair", ends this nostalgic song from Luca Carboni. If only it were all as simple as that!

NOT EXACTLY A HOST....

Not exactly a host and not exactly golden, either, but I was pleased to see these at last opening on my balcony this morning. It would have been nice if they had managed it for St David's Day, but you can't have everything!

And when you see clumps of borage everywhere - it is late this year, which has been exceptionally cold - you know it's spring in Sicily!

A FAMILIAR AROMA

A sensual, heady aroma filled the air as I strolled home from work tonight.  What was it?

Yes, the orange blossom is out in Orange Blossom Square.

AROMATIC APRIL CHICKEN

I kind of invented this the other day and was pleasantly surprised by the result:

3 tablesp olive oil
6 bone-in, skinned chicken thighs
10 very small onions, peeled but left whole
1 leek, finely chopped
handful of baby carrots
c. 500 gr new potatoes
a few sage leaves
sprigs of fresh rosemary and thyme
c. 10 ml red wine
seasalt & freshly ground black pepper

Heat the oil in a wide pan.  Add the leek and onions and cook, stirring for about 5 mins.  Add the sage leaves and stir around a bit.  Add the chicken and brown on all sides, then add the carrots and swirl them around.  Chuck in the potatoes, seasoning, rosemary and thyme.  Stir everything well, then add the wine.  Simmer for about 50 mins.

Buon appetito.

BENTORNATI, GELATI

The gelati are back and so we know it is spring in Modica's via Sacro Cuore.  Hats off to Bar Fargione, for being the first to offer them this season.

SABATO MUSICALE

I find these words particularly poignant given the world situation:

In questa primavera l'Europa cambierà
la gente è più sincera, la pace arriverà.

This spring Europe will change
people are more sincere and peace will come.

THESE FOOLISH THINGS....

'Tis the season to be melancholy and that's how I felt when I saw a man for whom I have feelings - he doesn't know about this - strolling in the April sunshine with his new love today.  I decided to go and buy something I didn't need but, it being 1 pm, only the newsagent's was open.  So now I have yet another baking tin, coutesy of the magazine with which it came "free" [if you paid an extra 7 euros].

The moral of this tale is that you can be a fool at any age.

But at least you can bang a baking tin about and make a lot of satisfying noise!

As the inimitable Dorothy Parker put it:

"Travel, trouble, music, art,
A kiss, a frock, a rhyme-
I never said they feed my heart,
But still they pass my time. "

- Dorothy Parker, Faute de Mieux.
