L'ANNÉE DES RETROUVAILLES

I haven't seen my French friend Marie-Laure for 6 years and at the beginning of each year that I've been in Sicily we have promised each other that that year would be "l'année des retrouvailles". However, family commitments, work and life in general had prevented such a reunion - until today. Marie-Laure and her Welsh husband, David, are on holiday in Modica so we met up at the Bar Edicolè for a long, leisurely and loquacious lunch.

It was the first time I've had a full lunch at the Edicolè and I must say the food was excellent. To start, I had pasta with mushrooms and pancetta

while both Marie-Laure and David had rice salad with tuna:

Then we each had arrosto misto with salad:

After all that, Marie-Laure and David could only find room for coffee but I, being more used to Sicilian portions, managed an ice cream!

Then we all headed back to my apartment for another reunion, that of Marie-Laure with Simi, whom she had not seen since my gorgeous one was a puppy:

A happy day and Simi thoroughly approved of the company!

Now I know that I don't like you. You're one of those lucky people who can eat, and eat, and never put on an ounce. I live with a family of sticks. (My daughter is 5'9" and weighs about eight and a half stone in the old money). The men of the family are all slim too...which leaves me...5'3" and ten stone. Believe me, when I say I struggle to stay at that mark.

Today we're off to Doyles's restaurant in Watsons Bay (Sydney). We're meeting some friends from Perth who we've not seen for fourteen years. Ivy is of Chineses/Malaysian origin and, I have been told, is still as slim as ever. I don't like her either.

I'm sure you didn't want to know all this stuff but there you go. You look like a good listener. I'll drink a toast this lunch-time to all you skinny folk who can indulge without consequences.
Cheers!

Hi, Mary. You make me laugh! I'm afraid I'm not, though and I only have to look at food to put on the pounds! I was much more what the Italians call "robusta" [a nicer word than "fat"!] until last year. Now I'm struggling trying to stay slim! I hate those people who can eat lard and chocolate sandwiches without putting on an ounce too. So I'll join you in the toast- cincin!

Wow that is a great reunion WL...the food looks delicious, I would struggle to eat 3 courses, just not used to it. It all looks good though. Pleased you had a great day with your friends too.

I agree with Mary, you are a good listener.

What was that proverb about the hungry French?

Good friends and good food: the perfect combination! Well done, you, for enjoying life in style - and to the full.

I'm definitely robust but can never deny myself the food of life!
I say "LET THEM EAT ANYTHING THEY WANT!" of course in moderation.

sounds like a lovely visit even for SIMI.

Hi, Cherie. Yes, it was lovely. Hi, Anne. Well, we do get plenty of time to digest food between courses here! You'd get used to it. I'm sure we shall, Ellee. You are very kind.

Ah, yes, WW. Very apt! Hello, Phidelm. Yes - what more could one ask? I agree, Lucia. Indeed it does, James. Hi, Saretta. Carpe diem. Hi, jams. Yes, my friends enjoyed a good nero d'Avola - on ice. I can't drink since my illness but it's a small price to pay for health.
