DAMNED IF YOU LOO.....

"....and damned if you don't." Thus might the thoughts of the priests of Palermo Cathedral have run last week, when they were subjected to much criticism because of a prominent "WC" sign in a side chapel. Where is the loo in question? Directly behind the altar, a fact which has astonished locals and tourists alike.

One of the priests has said it was the only place in the cathedral where they could have put a toilet facility and that it is needed because there are no public conveniences, or other premises with toilets, nearby. He also said that the general feeling among his colleagues is that it is better to offer the facility than not and emphasised that the altar in question is not used for Mass or to store the host and wine.

What do you think? Would you expect to find a toilet in a cathedral?

Well, you sure would hope there was one nearby when the need arose! If there wasn't a toilet available, then they'd have something to worry about. Surely to goodness there are more pressing, important issues going on in the world today in lieu of the placement of a loo!

One would think so, Lee!

I would expect one - more than one - in Toulouse Cathedral.

I would never expect to find a loo in a cathedral , unbelievable , I would take it out and build one nearby .. What church or cathedral offers WC facilities.

Very good, Sackerson! Quite so, Rosaria. I don't know, Anne.

Isn't being there for the needy the purpose of cathedrals and churches?

When you need to go...you need to go. Why should cathedrals be exempt?

This is 2014, after all...time for them to catch up with the times. The need to go to the toilet/lavatory/loo/bathroom...whatever one wants to call it is part of life ...so having toilet facilities in cathedrals and churches really shouldn't be so odd.

You are right, Lee but I think it will be a long time before the rest of Sicily catches up.

No, I don't expect I would.

Nor would I, Liz.
