FASHION NOTE - 11

In Sicily in winter the men all wear hats: not the baseball or head-hugging woolly caps favoured by the British male but real homburg or fedora hats. A tall Sicilian in a long, black cape-like coat and matching fedora is an imposing figure indeed.

I might take a fancy to a stylish and dashing Sicilian. I wear lots of hats myself, wide-brimmed straw ones in the summer of every colour, and warm felt ones in the winter. I did try an urchin type cap at the weekend and my younger son instantly disowned me. I grow more reckless with the passing years and dress to please myself now. He is used to it now.

  2. Like the Great Muscari, in G.K.Chesterton's The Paradise of Thieves, who took his hat and bowed in a low sweep. I can picture this.

  3. I haven't read that, James. I will look for it. Yes, I can imagine the men bowing like that!

Not sure where else to post this so here will have to do. Thanks for stopping by, fellow celt. I'm also a big fan of Simone de Beauvoir.

Looking forward to reading more from you.

  5. That I can imagine...and if I'm allowed...slightly swoon over! There is 'something' about the Italian man...hat or no hat!

Hats like they wore in the 60's in America.

I love hats too, I'm sure I would find those Sicilian men quite irrisitible.

  10. I find that I am somewhat unusual in that I wear my Aussie Akubra, especially on hot days and am always in a very large minority. It is usually the older men that you see wearing them around town. They are casual and elegant and they keep off those dastardly rays that are so strong on those extreme UV days that we get at this time of year.
