FOODIE FRIDAY - ONE A PENNY, TWO A PENNY....

Linda and I met in a supermarket bar for our weekly gossip this morning and I was delighted when Linda produced from her bag two homemade hot cross buns! She asked the barman / waiter if he minded our consuming them there, along with a cappuccino in her case and a lemon tea in mine and he was most obliging - indeed, interested to observe this strange British custom.

I don't know of many bars or cafés in Britain where you could eat your own food, do you?

Later, in the supermarket, I found raspberries on sale for the first time in Sicily ! I haven't tasted any for four years, so I'm off to enjoy them now.

  1. I was amused when I saw Hotcross buns on your plates :-)

I think it would be more like.... I don't know ANY cafes, they all have signs up..

"ONLY FOOD BOUGHT HERE CAN BE CONSUMED IN THIS CAFE"

How great of the barman/waiter..he must of wondered what the "BUNS" were..

Who is Linda..do we know her? How did she get the buns?

I hope you both enjoyed them :-)

  3. Hi, Anne. Yes, I remember notices like that. Linda is English, married to Gino the artist. I've mentioned her a lot. She made the buns - they were naughty but nice! Hi, Mutley. It's a long time since I got thrown out of a bar!

  4. I used to make home made hot cross buns too many moons ago. And o are correct, we wouldn't get away with that in the UK.

Happy Easter to you and Simi Welshcakes.

  6. I have a master bakers recipe for hot cross buns and I think you could get all the ingredients over there. If you want the recipe then email me.

I could even send you a rasperry cane cutting but I am not sure about the EU regulations to allow the import of anything with a root - I'll check it out anyhow.

  9. Believe it or not, I've just eaten two Hot Cross Buns! This is noteworthy, as I've not been able to eat much most of the week. I bet those homemade ones were nicer than mine though!

  11. I didn't realise that hot cross buns were singularly british! But, no, no cafe would let you eat your own food.

Hope you and Simi have had a good Easter.
