These are not large limes, as you may imagine at first glance [you rarely find limes on sale in Sicily and when you do they are imported] but green lemons and they are sold all year round. In fact, there was no other kind to be found anywhere yesterday. And yes, they are already ripe!
The skin is a little thicker than that of their yellow relatives and you may get less juice from them, but their flavour is divine for culinary purposes, especially, I feel, in savoury dishes.
Now, how about Green Lemon Land as a book title? What do you think? [A girl can dream!]
Well, maybe welchcakes. What about "The land of the salty kiss" Get writing.
ReplyDeleteSo are you writing that book Welshcakes? Of course the marketing people always come up with some sexier title to help sell books.
ReplyDeleteI have never heard of green lemons before!
ReplyDeleteAh, good idea, MM. One of these days,jmb.... Well, now you know, cherrypie! They are amazingly good.

ReplyDeleteThat book sounds a winner to me - stuffed with delicious recipes, of course! I had also never heard of green lemons (as opposed to unripe!) before today.
ReplyDeleteI'll happily buy an autographed book Welshcakes :)
ReplyDeleteWhat about green limoncello?
ReplyDeleteI have never seen green lemons before. They are beautiful!
ReplyDelete...the skin is a little thicker than that of their yellow relatives and you may get less juice from them...
ReplyDeleteyou sure they ain't limes, Welshcakes? C'mon!
I'll never forget being in India (home of the lime pickle, of course) and needing a lime for sinus-decongestion (in other words to keep a herbal-crazed homoeopathically-oriented friend quiet when I threatened to come down with a cold) she insisted: "ask for a lime; go on! they need 'em for slicing on g&t's etc so they've got them here: go on just ask!!"
so I did; got a lemon; took it back, asked for "green lemon" ...~... and finally got lime!!
Perfect for your cookbook! I like it and mix in some of your cocktails too! Best Seller, I can see it now! Than I can say I was there in the beginning! lol

ReplyDeleteThanks, Liz and I will try!
ReplyDeleteI have a recipe for Limoncello made from green lemons and actually made some this year! Haven't tasted it yet.
ReplyDeleteI used these to make lemon gelato (using the zest) with a hint of limoncello. They have a wonderful lemon flavor, despite the green color and now I won't use anything else if I can get my hands on these!
ReplyDeleteHi, pink. Do post about it and tell us what it tastes like! Hi, Rowena. Sounds wonderful.
