Using the Bible is a very good idea and YOU are much cleverer than you would have most of us believe! But the art of learning a language is in knowing the bits that join the words together, as you know.Welshcakes Limoncellohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17209759237794290941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26674022.post-42653200884115145702009-06-02T18:32:57.379+02:002009-06-02T18:32:57.379+02:00See you're lucky, Welshcakes: you speak Italian ab...See you're lucky, Welshcakes: you speak Italian about as well as I want to speak German

I'm beyond the scope of most language courses (though I'll be the first to admit I have the most shocking holes in my vocab it's unreal) so apart from reading what German magazines I can get my hands on (and they seem to be even harder to come by than they were in the 1980s & 1990s) I'm using the BIBLE ~ because without being retarded about it, it uses a fairly basic vocabulary of about 7000 day to day words, which just so happens to be the number at which you can say you have a "near native" command of any language.

I did a test by reading through the German-English section of a dictionary and seeing how many headwords I understood ~ and it turned out to be about 1 in 5 or 1 in 6 from a vocab of about 22,000 words which means I have about 4 or 5,000 (I would say 4)

But you know how irritating it is with foreign languages. Some things I know 2 or 3 ways of saying: others I cannot say at all without blusters of the most supremely inconvenient circumlocution!!Gledwoodhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09308172310486574510noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26674022.post-70871665684975379642009-05-06T03:43:00.000+02:002009-05-06T03:43:00.000+02:00Grazie, WW.Grazie, WW.Welshcakes Limoncellohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17209759237794290941noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26674022.post-44381157103111000022009-05-05T14:55:00.000+02:002009-05-05T14:55:00.000+02:00Buona fortuna!Buona fortuna!Whispering Wallshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03410656699815679312noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-26674022.post-64724711739244917272009-05-05T00:08:00.000+02:002009-05-05T00:08:00.000+02:00Thanks, Trubes and Cherie.
